Lettuce, Basil, and Wheat Grass

Happy Friday Everyone~

Last week I finished my 'Wickinponics' setup and have been monitoring it this week. I decided to plant Lettuce, Greek Basil, and Wheat Grass because they are relatively easy to grow, stay fairly small, and they're edible! I thought I planted the seeds perfect but as it turns out, the seeds were drowning and so far not germinating. So as a back up, I made some simple potters out of news paper, filled with a little vermiculite, placed seeds of each, and put them in the grow chamber this past Tuesday. Still no sign of life as of today; hopefully they will sprout over the weekend and come Tuesday or Wednesday I can transplant them into their new homes with the golden girls.:)

Here are some pics:
Poster I made explaining how each system works and how I am integrating the two.

Meet the Golden Girls!

Have a great Weekend Everyone

Come here fishy fishy..

Happy Thursday Everyone~

Ah..So I have math exams back to back tonight and I am super nervous! I am however taking a break from studying to blog about my research project. Matt and Josh have guided me through the preliminary steps on constructing stable platforms for my 2 aqua-wicking systems. As of yesterday I finished assembling the structures and made templates for my styrofoam boards that my plants will wick from. I have included lots of visuals-
Assembly required! This is a before picture
I needed to move this fish tank to another room so... syphon faster!!

Brilliant idea from Josh. "Just heat the knife on the hot plate then cut the styrofoam ..like butter".
Worked amazingly, thanks Josh

Almost there, this is how I left it on Wednesday. Both tanks are full of water, larger tank
has three fish while the smaller only occupies two.

Template for small tank will house 4 plants comfortably.

Large tank will house 6 plants, hopefully comfortably.

Its coming along!! YEY. Im still thinking of edible plants to grow that wont get too big or too tall, maybe some butter lettuce, romaine, and other leafy greens. Hope everyone is moving along on their projects. Have a great weekend:)

Peace,
Jenni

Summer is over - well not really!

Happy Friday Everyone~

Hope you all had a great summer, I sure did! I got to build a few things (a pergola over my spa, some new vertical planters, and a hanging wall unit to go in my gym under the T.V - all made out of pallets). I also took a trip to Oregon with my wife Tamatha. We drove up the coast from California which is considered the scenic route and was absolutely worth while. It took us 3 days to get to Portland but we stopped along the way at micro breweries. :) Needless to say I gained about 10lbs on our trip from good eats and awesome beer! We liked Portland but fell in love with a smaller city just SE of it called BEND! Bend was really memorable. We hiked, kayaked, biked, walked and felt like we were at home. I can see us relocating there in the near future. We have 3 weenie pups and I know they will do great there too and enjoy life in the changing seasons. Overall my summer was great and I have no complaints other than the heat. Get me back to Oregon!!

Peace,
Jenni
